Why don’t Vegans eat eggs? I’ve always wondered this so I am putting it out there to the Vegans of the world and asking you, why don’t Vegans eat eggs?

I completely understand the whole not wanting to eat beef, pork, chicken or fish. But eggs? I don’t understand that. I also understand the whole ‘big corporation’ thing and how they deal with chicks and I’m not talking about that either, I’m talking about why do you think it’s wrong to have a few chooks in the backyard that are loved and fed and roam around and lay eggs, every day, that aren’t fertilized as there is no rooster? Those eggs aren’t going to ever turn into a chick, chickens lay them regardless of whether or not there is a rooster, they don’t care that you take them because they just lay another one, when they get broody you can put pretend eggs under them and they don’t know the difference.

So, please, I really just don’t understand why Vegans don’t eat eggs!

I would love to hear from you, and I don’t want this to be any kind of slanging match, this isn’t an ‘us or them’ post, this also isn’t about who is right or wrong, it is a genuine question from someone who was brought up a vegetarian, who mainly eats meat now because her husband does (and he does the cooking) and who wouldn’t care if I was vegetarian again, however I have never been vegan nor do I see myself becoming one.

And while we’re at it, what does being Vegan mean to you? Is it a diet choice only or do you see it as a lifestyle choice where you don’t use anything made with animal by-products and how strict are you in keeping to this?
