Being mindful is a term that seems to be becoming very popular, up there with ‘being happy’ and ‘wellness’.

However, we need to makes sure that instead of it just being a word that we use, that we actually turn it into a verb – do it… be mindful.

And you want to start it at the beginning of every day and then take it through the day with you.

How exactly do you do that?

Glad you asked.  Here’s ten simple things that you can start doing around your home that help you practice mindfulness every, single, day.

  1. Wake up with the sun. I’m not a fan of daylight saving. I firmly believe that our bodies should just continue with the way that nature intended.  Yes, even if that means, that here in Queensland Monty is waking me at 4.00am for a morning walk!  I just kind of change my day and routines to adjust, and I do know that I’m blessed that I work from home and can do that.  However, with those early morning rises, I also go to bed early as well.  As nature intended!  Just think that you can achieve just as much in your day, if not more, when you get up with the sun.
  2. Meditate.  Just sit and meditate for 5 minutes at the start of your day so you can be more focused and clearer minded in dealing with whatever comes your way.
  3. Make your bed.  While the earth won’t stop if you don’t make your bed, I’m a fan of a bed being made.  It tidies the room, brings order and calm and there’s nothing better than getting into a nicely made bed at night.
  4. Empty the Laundry Basket.  Doing the laundry is an act of personal responsibility and you should do it without feeling resentful. Did you know that doing your laundry can, actually make you happy?  Don’t believe me? Check how you feel when that laundry basket is empty! It’s a sense of accomplishment knowing that it’s done.
  5. De Clutter / tidy.  Do this at the start of every day.  Tidy up the rooms, put things away that aren’t needed, wash your breakfast bowl and put it away (or in the dishwasher).  Create a sense of calm in your rooms, this includes getting the kids to put their things away!
  6. Set a timer. Do you get distracted easily? Set a timer on your phone or a kitchen timer and give yourself a timeframe in which to wholly focus on the task that you need to do, regardless of what it is. Just focus on that one thing and get it done.  You’ll actually find that you accomplish more by doing this because you’re not getting side tracked.
  7. Sweep the path.  You can think of it as a thankless task, but when you sweep the path or rake the leaves it’s setting up a meditative practice, plus you’re outside in the fresh air.  Just focus on what you’re doing without thinking of the outcome or the gain.  It’s a pointless never ending job but it’s also a good thing to learn as it will change your view.
  8. Bring the outdoors inside.  Have plants around your home that bring that beautiful energy inside.  The added bonus is so many of them help clear the air and some even help you have a good night’s sleep.
  9. Let the darkness come.  When it starts to get dark, that’s when you actually need to turn the TV off.  Stop looking at your phone, start winding down and get ready for bed. Our bodies are designed to go with the earth’s natural rhythm.  Set a time when you turn the tv and electricals off and just enjoy the darkness and calm.
  10. Sleep when your tired.  I get that when you’re in an office you can’t always have an afternoon nap, but as mentioned above, don’t fight the rhythm that your body is in.  When you’re tired you sleep.

To help you create a permanent sense of mindfulness in your home, make sure that the colours you use are calming rather than clashing.  You want to walk into your home and feel calm, not stressed.

Learn your bodies needs.  Eat when you are truly hungry, not because you’re bored or thirsty.  Let yourself experience actual hunger, not just kind of hungry so you start eating junk.  Eat healthy food, treat your body well, by eating wholesome foods.

Also, create a nice calm corner, somewhere that is beneficial for you to meditate or just relax and read a book.  Find a scent that you love and that calms you.  Make sure you have natural candles or incense burner / diffuser and spread that scent throughout your home.

I hope that the daily tips help you and that you can also create a sense of mindfulness permanently in your home.
